78 Monte/Flip

Post by RebStew on March 17th 2008, 1:45 am

I've been looking for a car to turn over and resell. I happened to go through Craigslist last night and found this 78 Chevy. It was listed for $500.00. I went to look at it and I knew as soon as I drove up on it I was buying it. It is hard to find a Monte with this good of a body. It does have some spots but for a 78 it's it decent shape. I know that this doesn't fit into the (traditional) style of the club but thought I would post what I do to it on here. If I do anything to it.

The roof was ripped off and a screwballed fly by night body man did the body work.

Bad parts on the body other than a few dings are the trunk and hood. they will need to be replaced. hood was jumped on and the trunk was busted opened and then bondo'ed over.

The worse part of the car is the inside. everything is missing or screwed up. Even the dash. EVERYTHING on the inside will have to be replaced.

I ask if the price was firm and he said no. I said well would ya take $400.00 for it? before I could get my mouth shut he's says"YEAH!" I wondered if there was more wrong with it than he said and what I seen. He told me the brake line was busted. You could see how bad the inside looked. I gave him 4 bills for it and left. Ronnie and I drove back out to get it. It cruises good at 85+ MPH it must have a 241 gear in the rear.

Now for the good news. It has 20K on a new GM 350 crate motor. It has new pipes with Flows. new RPM aluminum intake and Eldelbrock carb was put on when they did the engine swap and a few other goodies. if someone makes me a good offer it may sell before I touch it. Someone already stopped and ask if it was for sale.

I like the Monte but it's not what I want for a hot rod. With some money tossed at it and fixed up a bit it will sell and I will have cash for my 36 Very Happy
I use to flip car before Amy and I got together. I made pretty good money at it. I need to get rolling again.

there are a few things I will have to do to it before getting to crazy on it. I need to replace a brake line and I found a spot where it's leaking gas. I'll fix them and find some cool wheels for her.

Rallies are okay. I have a couple of sets. I may use them on her if I can't find any Welds.

I think I have a G body dash laying around if your interested in it pm me.
“That journey to Rouen was a terrible embarrassment to Jesse and me, for on the long straights across France, that great bulbous Oldsmobile coupe with the trailer and racing car on the back sat behind us no matter what we did. We both rowed our little Porsches along as hard as we could, and the Miller entourage just sat there in our mirrors. When we stopped, Ak removed his cigar and asked, ‘Your little cars okay?’”

I have 2 two and half car garages plus my little barn out on the property. Can you believe that I have no room to work on this car. so with the rain I haven't been able to do anything to it. I did track through the mud at the junkyard today to look for some parts. Why in the rain? I learned from buying dented stuff that if you wait till it rains you can see how bad the body parts are. With the rain you get a gloss look and you can see all the small dings and dents better. Most body parts sitting in these junk yards have sun baked flat paint on them. It makes it hard to see just how bad the body really is. I found a nice hood today and I will try to pick it up in the morning. they were closing by the time I found it and I didn't have time to take it off. It has two small ding in it. It's hard to tell from the picture but the one on the car now is waisted. Someone jumped on it and crushed the bracing on the inside and it has some through rust in a few places. It could be fixed but would take about 15 to 20 hours to get it right. Easier to buy one.

So far I cleaned all the garbage out of the car. There was a lot. Amy scubbed the floor mats and has put them up untill the inside gets done. I also took a razor blade to some of the pinstripes and racing decal they had on the 1/4 windows.

I went back to the junkyard today and grabbed the hood and a right front turn signal lense. John Schmidt stopped down and helped me stick it on the car. I also took a razor blade and scraped all the windows on the inside. The guy spray bombed everything black and got over spray on the windows. The windows were then cleaned with Windex. Wow, I can see out now.

The Monte had it's first date with an outside source. I took it over to Pro Touch and had the windows blacked out. If I don't tint my windows myself, I take the car to these guys. They do great work and if you are not happy they will redo it. This is limo black. You can see out fine but no one will even see your image from the outside.
