Bread & Butter 27 Ford Project

Post by RebStew on December 24th 2008, 6:55 pm

Amy wants to call it Bread & Butter. So Bread & Butter it is. I've been on the lookout for a decent cowl for a long time. I've been collecting parts for a (GASP) traditional T or A for over two years now. 30 minutes after midnight on Christmas day I won the bid on this 26/27 T cowl $173.50.
More details on what I have planned after I get it home.

Amy, myself & the kids ran up to Dayton to get the cowl. The guy that had it seems to be pretty cool. He's moving to Northern Ky soon. He had all kinds of stuff in this huge garage. Some stuff I missed untill I downloaded the pics that Amy took. The cowl is in better shape in some places than I thought it would be and rough in a few places that I thought it would be good. After I get it in the garage I'll see what we have to work with.

We rapped up the day by stopping at Dougs house to pick him up for a fast food grub fest. Other than the traffic on the way home it was a cool day.

The guy had more cars in the garage. I didn't get to take anymore pics because I wasn't sure how the guy felt about it. I can't wait to get started on "Bread & Butter"..

We were checking to see if we were going to channel the body over the frame. This is a pic of Steve trying to figure out if he was going to sit too high in the tub. Notice the coke cans in this pic. If you look at his face he looks a little worried.

Notice the coke cans are a little under pressure. Can you say help I've exploded the coke cans and I can't get up!! He did wise up and get a wooden stool. I can't remember laughing that hard. And how often can we see Steve do something wrong. lol

At least the Dr Peppers were okay, that's all that matters. Very Happy I don't think I've ever seen Amy laugh that hard.

Today I went over in Ohio and bought a 24' stick of 2X4 steel for the frame. I went out in the garage tonight and played with some of the stuff I bought but more than anything just sit and wondered how some things would go on it. This is not going to be something that everyone likes but it will be dependable, fast and fun to drive. More than anything it will be a form follows function rod. Stripped down RPU that will have a little salt flat flare, with a touch of early 60's show rods style. Sounds like two roads going in different directions doesn't it. We'll see how it turns out.. Very Happy
Here's the bones and the axle I will be using. It was suppose to be a model A axle when I went to get it but turned out to be 37 to 41. I'm gonna use it anyway..Someone drilled small holes in it. I thought about opening up every other hole to a bigger size but after looking at it I'm not touching.

I've always liked the look of the wide five rims so I snatched this front end up. I'll use everything but the axle. I paid $1oo bucks and another $1oo to have it shipped. It's not here yet but hopefully it will all be in usable shape.

Everyone knows how I feel about the term RAT ROD. I guess you guys can say I'm building at rat rod because I found this little mummy in the T project. I told the ol' lady I was going to have him dipped in clear resin and rounded off for a clear ball shifter knob. She didn't like the idea.

Cute isn't he???

Re: Bread & Butter 27 Ford Project

I was fighting with myself on this project. I wanted something traditional but wanted something that rode good and would hold up to being beat on sometimes. I thought hard about it and figured out why I was beating myself up over it. What I want and what everyone else expects from a traditional rod are too different things. I had a buggy spring for the back but it's going to sit so low and you won't be able to see it anyways. Riggs and I got to talking and we worked out a deal on his S10 frame. The back half will be stuck in the bed of the RPU. The die hard traditionalist will freak but I could care less. I want something that I can build fast, be fast and if I brake something, it's an easy fix. You won't know what it is anyway unless you see this build thread or if I run over you. Very Happy

I'm still waiting in the front end parts to be shipped out. I emailed him today and got a little red with him. He said they would be shipping it out tomorrow. We'll see..
I started messing with the rear S10 frame the other day. I wanted a semi long bed. Well long for a RPU anyways. The bed will be the length of the leaf springs.

2X4 was pushed as far up to the rear of the spring as it would go.

Frame ends hacked off and the 2X4 welded in. The rear frame brace was then removed.
