Hot Rod Power Tour - Dayton, OH

Post by Mr. Fabulous on Thu 11 Jun - 1:08

I stopped in at UD last night on the way home from work to check out the Power Tour. I was surprised at the number of cars and people. I have a friend that ran a few legs of it years ago and he always said it was a blast. I got a small taste of it last nite and I think it would be a really cool vacation. I think it would be about a 10 day cruise in.

Saw Scott Sullivan's "Cheese Wiz" for the first time in quite awhile...

The wagons seemed to be out in force. I guess they're more comfortable for the long haul.....

A really nasty sounding Nova

And a Hemi powered Olds

The people sure looked like they were having a good time. I sure would like to have a little nicer vehicle to do this some time while gas is still affordable and would have hated to feed some of those hot rods from Wisconsin to Tenn.

Yeah, they were coming from up around Detroit to Dayton yesterday. Madonna and I saw a bunch early this morning getting ready to head south.

Rod Stephens called me a couple days ago and ask if I wanted to run the section of the tour. I wasn't goiong to and at the last minute called to say I would go. He said he didn't want to get the 55 with the blower out in the rain so he wasn't going. I jumped in the 57 and headed out. It wasn't rain but the ground was wet. It was my old fault for not watching what I was doing but as I went up Pools Creek Rd. I hit a wet spot and the DOT aproved cheater slick with it's great rain grove sent the rearend of the wagon around to the front of me as I went around a corner.Only thing that saved me from slamming into a tree is the road curved back to the direction the car slid at. I made it to the top of the hill to see this at the gas station.

This 55 was cool.

I talked to a few of the guys there and snapped a bunch of pics. The pumps were full so I figured I drive on up the road to fill up. Next station was just as bad. I made it to the pumps and got out to snap some more pics. As I was talking to some of the guys they were telling me about a wreck where a hotrod t boned another car. It was calling for rain on an old country road and I know 27 pretty good but I also know Pools Creek. A road that some remember I would drive up it at full pedal at 3 a.m. with my lights off, ridge running back in the day using just what moonlight would glow off the double yellow lines. I figured it was not a good idea to run down there with the slicks on the back so I figured I sit and watch the cars go by.

Randy Turner pulled up and we figure we would go up to the park and ride and watch the cars.

We parked and watched the cars go by. By the time I left I was pretty mad at myself. I don't care to see cool cars having fun but just sitting there I knew I had messed up by not having a car fit to run on a rainy day. Now before anyone says "well I would have run it with the slicks on it" Think about it. It's not worth me running into a $60K car and wrecking them if the car gets away from me. Slicks ride on top of water not through it. Next year I'm going to try to hit this run.
