1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe

Post by 6-71Kid on June 28th 2009, 1:18 pm

Well I have finally gotten my car home. So know the fun begins Heres a shot of what it look like know.

The short term goal for this is to get the breaks working and get the engine working. I know I'm going to need to get a 6 volt battery.

I'm going to work on getting the body work done on it first after I get it mechanically sound. I'd like to get rid of the smaller grill bars and just leave the 3 bigger bars. I also want to get rid of the stainless steel on the front fenders and on the running boadrs. I'm also going to shave the driprails and fill in the seams between the fenders and the body.

I haven't decied what I'm going to do about the interior and wheels. but I got a little bit before I need to work on those.

I've seen 6 volt batteries at Sams for a decent price. Don't forget, you will need a battery charger that is capable of 6 volts also.

Hang on to that charger. Alot of the new ones don't even have 6 volts anymore.

I have some new brake parts that might fit it along with some new tune up parts and some new voltage regulators.

One thing I forgot is the electrical system is positive ground.

Well I had read that it was a positive ground system. I did put the battery in it but so far it doesn't have any power anywhere so now I need to chase the electrical system. Well I'm headed back out the to work on it some more. Some point this weekend I'm going to try and find out what is wrong with the brakes but from what I have read it pretty much is going to have to be completely rebuilt. Though so far I haven't even been able to find where you would add brake fluid.

There should be a place in the floor on the drivers side to check the brake fluid.

I'm having some problems with the electrical. Specifically that I'm not getting in power to anything. So I've been debating on if I should trace all of the wires to see were the problem is of should I just rip it all out and replace it all.

I was wondering what you guys would do.

If the wire look to be in good shape and not all cobled up it may be easier to just figure out what the problem is. If the wires look rough and the covering is coming off then redo it. I wouldn't rip everything out. Just wire it up enough to get it running and see what you have to work with.

Some of the wires definitly are in bad shape. But some still look like there in good shape. I know for one thing I will have to rewire the lights, the radio doesn't work and theres not much else left to the wiring harness.

Edit but I definitly get what you are saying. I think that the best option might be to leave the stock wires in there and run new wires.

Cole , my A is a positive ground as well, I had the same problem when I got it home. Try checking continuity thru the main battery cables, my positive cable was all funked up in the connector and keeping any current from flowing thru it. I changed both cables to some heavy welding cable ground wire, ( I will check size for you but any good battery cable should work) and viola I had it running in no time flat. So after that I made sure all connections where clean ground points main thing on 6 volt or any volt is to make sure all your connections are clean. Use emory cloth or something like 180 220 grit, also make sure you have good voltage/amperage from your battery...Good luck, oh and buy you a good multi-meter and test light, just make sure it has a 6 volt bulb in it...lol ( I won't go into thet story) Razz

Well I finally got some new battery cables made. I did change the ground a little bit from stock. It only had a cable going from the positive side to the motor and I add an extra one from the positive to the body. But know that I have good cable I was able to hit the start button and the motor turned over. I still have some electrical problems but I don't think its anything major. The headlights didn't come on but the taillights did. I also found out that the horns definitly work, and they are LOUD.

So now my next plan now that the motor is turning is to get a coil and see if I can get some spark going and see if I can get the beast fired up. I was so glad to here that motor turning over.

Does anybody on here know a good place to get a 6 volt coil?

Before you go buying any parts come over and look through my garage and shed as there is a chance I might have what you need since I had a couple 50 chryslers.
