Speaking of boat anchors 2 bbl 396 BBC

Post by junkyardjeff on November 15th 2009, 2:43 pm

Over 25 years ago I tried to buy a 69 caprice off a college girl that the timing chain went out and it had a 396 with a 2 bbl carb, what was strange is the carb looked real close like a quadrajet but only had the primaries. I think it had the same bolt pattern as a QJ and could of had a 4 bbl intake too but I never got the car as her father had it repaired so I never got to really got to look it over closely, anybody ever remember see one of those strange carbs as its the first and only time I seen one.

Must of been a very very low production, there is a 429 in a big merc wagon in Starks with a 2 bbl and its the only 2 bbl I have ever seen on a 429/460. I think on the 396 it used a 4 bbl intake so GM would not needed to cast one for a a 2 bbl,if you did not look close it looked like a QJ.

The girl was attending UD and was from the east coast,it was a 4 door hard top if I can remember correctly and if I got it the body would of been trashed and the motor installed in a 67 C20.

I had one of those carbs about 20 years ago. It was on a 79 RS Camaro I traded for. Like you it's the only one I've ever seen. I think it was a dual jet or something like that.

Where the secondaries should be was a blank spot.

That was a one year only deal.....1969 396 that was in big body cars like wagons,caprice,impala,etc....it was RPO L66...which meant 396 265hp.....the lowest rated 396 of its time......ive had two of them,i still have one in my stash of big blocks Very Happy

Was there a special 2 bbl intake or was the carb designed to be used on a 4 bbl intake to keep cost down,if it was a one year only carb no wonder not too many have been seen.

it was a 2bbl intake, cast iron for large oval port heads. The carb was used through the 70s on other GM engines but that was the only year for the BBC.
