readjusting 429 valves

Post by CustomCabby on May 6th 2010, 4:56 am

Does anyone know the torque setting for adjusting 429 heads? It is a hydraulic but I just want to check and make sure because I am almost positive that they are rattling. I am taking covers off this weekend to check them out. I have heard conflicting things from "there is no adjustment" to "well, it all depends ....".

Hyd shouldn't rattle, a loose ford is a happy ford, you'd lose power if they were tight, but not loose I wouldn't think.....

Being its a 429 it will have at least 10 to one compression so it will need premium fuel to run right,if you are using regular gas it wont like it and ping badly.

It's gone through about 8 gallons of premium already, think I'm going to pull the covers tomorrow. I just cant understand why it doesnt rattle when cold but gets worse as it gets warmer.

Does it rattle or chatter? If it's a chatter It may be as jeff said. That old Cleavland That Schmidty had in his Mustang would do that even with 92 in it. It had some crazy compression to start with then he took 30 off the heads so it made it worse. It needed racing fuel. If you ran good gas it wasn't as bad. It would sound fine when cold but after it warmed up and you put it under a load it would chatter. Detonation is a bad thing...

Okay, so being there is no racing fuel around here for me to test this theory out, what would you suggest to boost the octane since I already have the best fuel in it as I possibly could have? Does that stuff on the shelf really work? At this point, I'm willing to try anything! But I will note that if this motor can only run on high octane racing fuel.... the truck is outa here! I can't afford to keep racing fuel in this thing to ba a daily driver.

If you wanted a old truck for a daily driver you should of kept the 68 as those 360s will run on anything due to much lower compression, those 429s were built to run on good gas which we dont have anymore and the 360s were truck motors and built to run on cheap gas so the farmers could afford them. It also might be carboned up so run something through it and clean it out and back off the timing some.

I got a low compression 460 that I would trade for that 429 but I cant do anything untill next spring, that engine family was also used in the large trucks so you might be able to use some parts from those motors to get it more cheap gas friendly but I think the truck motors used shorter pistons or taller decks so it would be easier to change the motor to a post 72 block.

This is a new engine isn't it? Didn't the guy just redo the entire thing? If so there is no carbon build up like an old engine would have. What I'm wondering is if he milled the heads and over sized bore and anything else could raise the compression up higher than your octain at the pumps can handle. Someone needs to listen to this to see. There is a different in rockers being loose and detenation chatter.

Maybe I should run over and hear it before he touches anything,if the rockers are loosening up when hot there could be a oil pressure issue or have too short of pushrods. I had a 68 F100 with a rebuilt 360 that did the same and found out it had rebuilt lifters that were shorter then factory specs, replaced the lifters and the problem went away.

I think he just needs a fresh set of eyes and ears that have messed with these before. It would be nice of ya Jeff if you could. I'm thinking it's something simple but without me looking at it, it's hard to tell.

Does it have a oil pressure gauge hooked up?,those motors do not need alot of oil pressure at idle as the 460 in my beater truck goes down to 15 in gear at idle and its quiet. I can look at it sometimes this week.
