Now I got two Y blocks

Post by junkyardjeff on June 10th 2010, 3:36 pm

Since the first one turned out to be a 272 saturday I went to Cleveland to get a 62 292,along with the motor I picked up a factory 289/302 4 bbl intake and a carter 4 bbl from a 56 merc that will bolt on a Holley teapot manifold. I was hoping I would get the exhaust manifolds with the 292 as they are larger and flow better then the 55 /56 manifolds but I do know where some are, this motor has the better distributor and the later flywhel so I can use a later trans so it was well worth the trip to get it and beats trying to get one out from a car in a junkyard. While I was up north I drug back a 49 Pontiac 2 door for a guy at work so he bought half the gas and the beater truck with the 460 got better gas mileage then I thought.

Looks like I will use the 272 for parts since the 292 sat on a garage floor for about 40 years and must have rusted a hole in the oil pan and now the back of my truck looks like the gulf of Mexico,I hope to start the rebuild process after I get the 66 done and will give me time to reasearch some cams and other parts for this motor.

I finally got around to put some PB blaster in the cylinders on the new 292 as I was certain it was stuck but it turned over and all the plugs were a light tan so it seems to have been running on all 8 and in good tune so I hope I can get by with just s freshening up and a mild cam and no major machine work other then the usual,I think I am going to use the 272 in a future roadster project.
