37 is getting new gears

Post by junkyardjeff on December 9th 2010, 2:22 pm

The 2.79 gears that came in the 8 inch were just too tall and is actually making the 235 get worse gas mileage then when it had 4.10s so I ordered a center section with 3.70 gears, its been gone through and I am spending a little more then I want but I could not find any used gears at the swapmeets and dont want to crawl under all the cars in the junkyards only to find out the tag is too rusted to get the ratio so I am going to spend the money and buy one that is rebuilt and can consider it finished the driveline swap finished. I kind of miss the 4.10s when driving it around town but could not go fast on the highway but now with the T-5 it will get it will perk up around town and can cruise it around 2300 RPMs at 65 which is in that motors sweet spot, after the gears go in I can get the speedo corrected.

The gears were on the porch this morning so off to get some kerosene for the heater so one night this week they will be installed,I was also wanting to change the gears in the 55 but since the rear end in the 37 was quiet the center section from the 37 will be installed in the 55 and while the 55 is in the big garge its time to change the cam. It has a cam that wants to come in at 2500 RPMs which is not good with a highway gear,I really dont want to spend the money on the 351 as it would be better spent on the Y block but it will need a cam when its installed in my 65 so I will do it now.

I do have some better 9 inch gears but they are a 2.75 and a 3.50,the 3.50 needs spider gears since its noisey on turns. Opened the box with the new gears and turned out to be a 9 inch so I should have the correct parts next week, something got crossed up on the order and the new gears will be a 3.55 insted of 3.70. I thought that box was a little more heavier then what a 8 inch pig should weigh so I need to ship it back.

The 9 inch went back and the 3.55 8 inch arrived about a hour ago,the FedEx driver was working late tonight and tuesday after work it will go in so the 55 will go back in the garage top and get the gears that came out of the 37 since they were quiet plus a cam and intake change. The cam change might push back the Y block build if it perks up the 351 like I think it will.

How big of a cam you going to run? Got to watch those weak valve springs. I've seen them beat a cam lobe round on those ol Fords.

I won't be ripping in to that 302 in Aryan unless something happens to it. I think I can get a lot better time out of it after the bugs are all worked out. Which they may be. I'm trying to talk him into putting it back in street trim but we will see what he wants to do. I may do a little racing with it this year but I'm not hitting the track every weekend like last time. Seems like the whole summer was spent drag racing. Which it was fun but if I keep it up I may have to make Joey stay on the porch. lol lol!

Gears have been installed but there is too much snow to do a test drive.

You need to bring down some highway gears and toss them in my 64 for me... I really have been thinking hard about the T-5 swap on it.. Just not sure if I want to spend the money. I could get away with some better gears and be happy.. The 4:10's are fun, but its a killer on the highway....I would even think about swaping these if i could find a decent set...

I took the 37 out for a spin around the big block a couple times and its alot better with the 3.55s,I have a 3.50 center section in the garage that was in Dougs wagon but I think it needs some repair to the spider gears.

Steep gears stink. I need to get those crazy 513's out of Aryan's Stang.
