Too tall gears can be a problem just like the steep gears,it made the gas mileage worse on the 37 since that motor was not designed to go that slow. A custom grind cam could of helped but I am not going to take the whole front off the truck to do that and would rather build another motor.

I don't have a vehicle with a 9" any more. If Jeff doesn't put it in his four door I guess we'll just have to stumble over it if you don't come get it. Jeff has 8" gears in about all of his too. Ask him, he's the one with it in his garage. You got a (or can ya get) an 8" around 3.50 or 3.25?

I have two of those 3 speed with o/d from the 80s trucks that might work, you would have to redrill the trans for the earler bolt pattern.

I have both versions of the o/d trans, one has the shifter coming out the top like a 30s trans and the other looks like a toploader 4 speed with external linkage and it has the shifter. The one that has the shifter coming out of the top came out of a 84 f100 and the one with the external linkage came out of a 86 1/2 ton van and I would like to get what I have in them. I think I have 125.00 in the one from the truck and I have 85.00 in the one from the van.

I will need to stop up and see if i can make it fit a Y block.... Thats the big question....I know bolting up is'nt a problem, just the input shaft lenght and spline....

I think when I put my top loader behind a Y-Block I had to grind some off the input shaft becauce it was just a little too long and I changed that collar that's on the front that goes over the input shaft. I think it was too long also. I know we never tore it apart to put it in.

A spacer would eliminate the problem of the imput shaft being too long.

Finally got to take it on a long drive and the 3.55 gears are alot better, now if I can just get the valves a little quieter but it looks like the rocker arms are worn out and can get them only adjusted so far. Chevs of the 40s sells a rebuilt set so in couple weeks will send for some and a heat kit for the intake to work with the fenton headers as it does not run too good when cold with a unheated intake.
