66 F250

Post by junkyardjeff on July 7th 2008, 4:41 pm

I started to take it apart for the installation of the 460,I got most of the front sheetmetal except for the pass fender which had a bolt that would not come out. Its near the door at the top of the fender and now that the rest is off I will probably have to use a pry bar to force the fender off and repair the damage later. I think some think I am nuts for installing such a big motor with gas prices so high but I would think it would suck more gas with a small motor then the big one,I should have the old motor and trans out wendsday and get the frame cleaned up before installing the new motor. Along with the 460 its getting power steering and power disc brakes plus a front and rear sway bar and it should be painted before it hits the road again. Jeff

It had one of those slide in nuts on a clip that spun but I was able to force it out and the fender is off,I did get the motor and trans unbolted and its ready to pull tonight after work. I am going to try to get the new motor in late this week or early next week. Jeff

Motor and trans are out along with the motor mount stands and clutch linkage, going to clean the grease off the frame tomorrow and clean up a P/S box. Before I install the motor I am going to install a P/S box and make steering column work since the P/S box is longer,I willl have to shorten the column a little and use a P/S shaft which I have but I am not cetain I will use the automatic column as I would like to find a long lokar shifter if I can find one reasonably priced. Frame is cleaned up and painted and the p/s box is in and the 460 mounts are also in,I decided to get a lokar shifter and use the original column and have the brackets mounted on the trans. This weekend I am going to clean up the firewall and get it painted before installing the motor early next week and the motor cleaned up good and is going in as is since its was painted after it got rebuilt and I dont want to get carried away since its a work truck. The 460 is sitting in but will needs to be hooked up,I will have to redrill holes in the frame for the trans crosssmember since its sitting a couple inches back. I probably wont work on it much this week as I have the 55 on stands to repair a couple leaks and get the E brake working before this weekend,I am planning on taking it to the family reunion sunday. This weekend I will be busy with the reunion sunday and a old truck show saturday so the 66 wont get worked on untill monday. Jeff

The holes in the frame for the crossmember have been drilled and the motor has been tightened down so its time to start hooking everything up. I was originally planning on using a one piece drive shaft but it was too short so I put the front diive shaft up in ity and it will work so I will keep the two piece to keep costs down,I might have to get about 3/4 taken off the front half since the yoke is all the way in the trans but since it needs a new carrier bearing I will have both done at the same time and should be cheaper then having a new one piece made. Next to be done is hook up the lokar shifter and make new cooler lines and se if i can get the original throttle cable to work and then its time to get out the new inner fenders and core support and have them blasted and painted and maybe having it running in a couple weeks,it wont see the road for some time as I have to put disc brakes on and front and rear sway bars but I hope to have all that done by october and then its time for body work and paint. I have all about done under the truck except for making new trans cooler lines, the lokar shifter is in and hooked up and I had to move the hole in the trans hump cover back about a 1/2 inch and have it where I can use the original boot. I was wanting to use a one piece drive shaft but the one I got is too short but the front half from the donor truck fit but was a little too long as it was all the way in the trans so its getting shortened a inch and a new carrier bearing and U joint installed, tomorrows job is to make the new cooler lines and hook up everything on the motor and then send out the new innner fenders and core support to be blasted and then I will paint them and then its time to work on the disc brakes and sway bars.
